What is the Parenting After Separation Course/Seminar?
The Parenting After Separation seminar/course is designed to educate parents on:
- the effects of their separation and/or divorce on the children;
- how to communicate with one another for the benefit of the children;
- the legal issues surrounding a separation and divorce;
- how to work together to promote a healthy environment for the children;
Do I have to take it?
If you are seeking a divorce or the assistance from the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta with respect to your custody, guardianship, parenting, or child support matter, and you have children who are under the age of 16, then you will be required to take this seminar within 3 months of filing your Statement of Claim or your court application. Upon completion of the Parenting After Separation Course in Alberta, you will be provided with a certificate that must be given to your divorce lawyer in Alberta so that it can be filed with the court. Without this certificate, you will be unable to file an application for relief from this court or you will be unable to obtain a divorce certificate, except in very limited circumstances.
When should I take this Course/Seminar?
Immediately! Without this certificate, your Edmonton Family and Divorce Lawyer will be limited with what he or she can do for you. As indicated above, the certificate must be filed with the court before you can bring an application for the relief specified above.
Where can I take this Course/Seminar?
The Parenting After Separation seminar in Alberta is available both online or in person. The in-person seminar is approximately 6 hours long. The online e-course takes approximately 3 hours to complete.
What if there is an emergency situation, do I still have to take the course?
The Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench has the ability to provide you with a temporary exemption typically in an emergency situation. Contact your Edmonton divorce lawyer for more information.
