Six things you need to know about domestic violence in the province of Alberta

  • Get away if you are a victim of domestic violence
If you or another family member have been subjected to domestic abuse in your home, go to another location immediately. Seek medical attention, if necessary, and tell the police what happened.
  • Domestic violence is rarely a one-time event
It is a mistake to assume (hope) that an act of domestic violence will happen only once. It is far more likely that the severity and frequency of the attacks will accelerate.
  • Do not accept the suggestion that every family experiences some physical confrontations
Domestic violence is not normal. Nor is it something that should be kept “within the family”. Domestic violence is a criminal offence. If you or another loved one are abused physically, leave immediately and go to a place where your attacker cannot find you.
  • Violence against one family member affects all the family members
Witnessing domestic violence can have a deep and lasting impact on children. Any children who have seen domestic violence should get mental health help as soon as possible.
  • Women are not more likely to make more false accusations of domestic violence
Men are more likely to make false accusations of domestic violence than women. It’s also a myth that women commonly make accusations of domestic violence to get child custody.
  • Domestic violence happens in rich and poor families
There is no correlation between economic status and the frequency of domestic violence. Families with significant wealth are just as likely to experience domestic violence as families of lesser means.
